Six new character lighting presets for Unreal Engine—available now!

January 20, 2022
As all great cinematographers, directors, and DPs know, lighting plays a crucial role in storytelling. It’s especially true in the case of characters.

Today, we’re excited to announce that six new lighting presets, created with the help of award-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser, are now available to download for free to use in Unreal Engine 4.26 and 4.27. Fraser’s highly regarded body of work includes Dune, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Zero Dark Thirty.

Already available in MetaHuman Creator, these presets are designed to bring out the best in your characters. They provide a match between MetaHuman Creator and Unreal Engine, making it easier to develop your characters in the context of their final lighting. They’re also great for general use in your Unreal Engine projects where you want a stylized lighting look and feel.
Choose from Portrait, inspired by studio beauty lighting; Split, which uses directional shadowing to provide something of the look of the old masters; Fireside, giving the natural warmth of firelight; Moonlight, for an ethereal effect; Tungsten, if you’re going for a look reminiscent of Blade Runner; and Red Lantern, inspired by the 1991 Chinese film Raise the Red Lantern, which was widely acclaimed for its aesthetics.
Download the content bundle to get started from the link below; you can view the documentation here. Plus, be sure to tune into our livestream with Greig Fraser at 2 PM EST today to hear why he thinks the presets are so useful, and get a live demo of the process of making one. If you missed it, check our YouTube channel for the recording after the fact.
